From the Runway to the Streets: 3.1 Phillip Lim Fall 2008 RTW

In my younger days summer was the fashion peak of the year. What could winter and fall have to offer against summer's carefree days of easy-breezy fashions? I lived for the days where I could shuck my shoes in favour of flip-flops, and heavy sweaters for halters. Ah, foolish youth. Now I realize that the cooler seasons have just as much style as their hot cousin. In fact, fall/winter fashions are amazing for their versatility and sophistication; for instance, you can easily segue skirts and heeled sandals to be year-round instead of only in the spring and summer by pairing them with tights.

A prime example of classic fall style is this somber and pulled-together look from 3.1 Phillip Lim:

Runway:

The look is simple and timeless. It utilizes layers for warmth, but is still sexy with the curve skimming skirt and just a hint of leg. Menswear touches are feminized by a bright red clutch and cinched waist.

Real way:

Start off with a simple black crew-neck sweater. Perfect for layering, or on its own and accented with a silk scarf, pieces like these are definitely a wardrobe staple. Crew-neck sweater, Gap, $44

Next, throw on a crisp blazer in a flattering heather grey. Choose a blazer with accented shoulders that will highlight a narrow waist, or for the more daring, go for a more boxy cut (but avoid this if you aren't tall or else you'll look stubby). Wool blazer, Gap, $67.99

This look is all about utilizing classic pieces for a pulled-together look. One such piece is this simple high-waisted skirt from Banana Republic. The just-below-the-knee length hides wide thighs and the skinny belt keeps the skirt from being matronly by forcing a hour-glass shape. Made of wool and cashmere, and featuring a subtle fluted hem, this skirt gives a touch of austerity that befits fall's sombre skies. BR Monogram high-waisted fluted skirt, Banana Republic, $125

Finally we arrive at my favourite parts of any outfit: the shoes and accessories. A great bag can uplift any outfit from just regular to something special. This red leather wallet/clutch is reminiscent of autumn leaves, and gives a pop of needed colour. Marc by Marc Jacobs 'Totally Turnlock' zip clutch, $198

The runway version uses a thin-striped purple and blue scarf, but I like this red checked one better to match the clutch and red is a great shade to warm skin colour. The Lumber Scarf, Triple 5 Soul, $32

Lastly this outfit requires the perfect pair of slouchy leather boots. These boots from Aldo utterly fit the bill: casual slouchiness is paired with tough, sexed-up black leather and the whole thing is topped off with a discreet metal buckle. Utter hotness. Frorina boot, Aldo, $150
