I have an angel on my shoulder but a devil in my hand

Sweater: gift
Skirt: Aritzia
Tights: H&M
Thigh-highs: unknown
Shoes: Spring

The weather is finally starting to shine here - has spring/summer finally sprung?? This past weekend I joined 50,000+ other runners in the annual Sun Run event through the streets of downtown Vancouver. I love living here when the sun is shining. What could be better on a sunny afternoon than running in the warm sun beside the ocean? I highly doubt I could live happily away from the coast and its clean ocean air. In this outfit is my first attempt at layering socks and sandals, sort of. I kinda like how it gives an edgy twist to this otherwise modest outfit. What you may not be able to pick out on this sweater are the cute little rhinestone buttons on the sleeves. Mr. Artist's mom actually bought me this sweater from a local department store and I felt a little guilty that my arms were too big to do up the buttons! Did the buttons not do up because of my uber toned arms, or my uber fatty triceps? Hmm, sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Also I finally got around to posting another vlog. Check out episode 2: Open a Book! below and subscribe to my Youtube channel!

*groan* The movie version of The Golden Compass was awful! You shouldn't use it as an endorsement of Pullman's trilogy. It's SO MUCH BETTER than Nicole Kidman's stilted acting. But then I've been obsessed with Pullman since I was 12 and I love his trilogy for its references to Paradise Lost and the poetry of William Blake.

I don't think it's true that people don't read anymore. They read different things (blogs, newspapers), but the boy goes to the library for new books every week. I just finished rereading Robertson Davies's Deptford trilogy; Davies has been called one of the greatest novelists of the 20th century. I find that it's a certain subset of our generation that doesn't seem to read as opposed to our entire generation, and in my experience it's mostly people who come from scientific or technical backgrounds who don't pick up books for fun. If one is exposed to this subset for a long period of time, it's easy to generalize and say that our entire generation doesn't read.

I heard there were tons of people on the running.. I hope you had a good time!

I'm a lover of books, but I haven't read any of those. I saw the movie of The Golden Compass, but haven't read the book. It's better of worse that the movie?? I always prefer the books that adaptations.

@Jess: haha um thanks! ;)

@lisa: haha I know you hated the movie, but I used it as a reference b/c people who aren't familiar with the book may be familiar with the movie. I wouldn't say that most of the non-readers are those from scientific/technical backgrounds as I find that many people in those areas actually read a lot, being of the more typically "nerdy" type haha. I certainly hope you're right that people still read, but there are lots of articles stating that people don't read as much anymore (http://www.arts.gov/news//news04/ReadingAtRisk.html, http://www.sdkrashen.com/articles/decline_of_reading/all.html) particularly those of a younger generation.

@Laura: the movie is definitely worse than the book!

Oh neat! you're doing Youtube now. I was about to make a comment on how delicate your voice was and was worried it'd sound creepy, but the first commenter spared me that : )

Yes sadly I fall into the group that you're peeved at. I hate reading unless it is news or magazine articles...I can't get into it and I've rarely liked the stuff I try to read.

I took a look at one of the links you provided (the other link doesn't display completely). As I said in my previous comment, I think that people these days tend to read different things instead of books such as blogs or newspapers. The first article seems to partially prove this point at least. The report being discussed is concerned with "literary readers," not readers in general, and is concerned with the decline in the number of people picking up novels or poetry. It would be interesting to see whether this decrease in literary reading corresponded with an upswing in other types of reading. (I'm looking at the dates for their previous data--1982 and 1992--way before the Internet took off and people spent more time reading online.) Nonetheless, I do agree that it's a shame that literary reading rates aren't what they used to be. I guess I should consider myself lucky knowing that the boy falls into the 1/3 of adult males who do read books regularly.

Congrats on doing the Sun Run! I didn't do it this year because I knew I couldn't beat last year's time haha.

AND I love reading :) I read everything, all the time (and probably would read more if I weren't on this darn internet so often! I find when I stay away from the net, I plow through a book in a day or two :)

Oh, I love that movie!!!

Sorry, I couldn't resist. You're right, reading is the best way to expand your mind. I've wondered if reading helps develop our imagination, or does having an imagination make reading more fun (since you can "see" what you're reading about)? Either way, reading makes us more well-rounded, informed, interesting people.

I really need to read more!
