Homestyle Chinese food: beef & tomato on rice

During my last trip home, my mom made one of my favourite comfort foods: beef & tomato ("fan ke yok"). I ate this all the time at home, but had yet to make it for myself for unknown reasons as I usually have tomatoes in my fridge and this super easy recipe doesn't even take that long to make. Plus, it makes for great lunch leftovers!
  • A few large, firm, tomatoes. Try using beefsteak tomatoes. Slice into quarters.
  • 2 lean steaks, cut into small slices
  • 1 tsp ginger, sliced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, sliced
  • rice, steamed
  • salt & pepper
  • sesame oil
  • cooking oil
  • 5 spice powder
In a small bowl, combine the beef slices with a drizzle of sesame oil, and a sprinkling of 5 spice powder. Stir to coat and set aside. In a pot on medium-high heat, pour a little cooking oil and when the oil begins to smoke, add garlic and ginger. After a minute, add the beef and stir fry until beef is cooked. Remove the beef from the pot. Add in tomatoes and a thin layer of water on the bottom. Cook for several minutes until tomatoes start to soften. Put the beef back in along with salt and pepper to taste, stirring occasionally until tomatoes reach the desired consistency. I like my tomatoes a bit soft, so I cook them until the skins become loose and there is a sauce that you can use to cover your steamed rice! Serve immediately and enjoy!

Looks tasty! I'd probably make my tomatoes mushy.. cuz I don't care for tomato texture.. but that's just my preference.

Perhaps I'll try this in my newfound free time! :D
Thanks for the recipe!

Looks so yummy! I love this dish too! My dad used to make it for me. I never seem to do well with beef dishes though :O(

That looks great. My mom made a bland version of it--no ginger, no garlic, no spice. She did use a little black pepper. Her's was good, but not a favorite and not memorable. I think I'll enjoy this recipe much more.

That lace moto jacket is sooo beautiful! I want it! Did you find out how much it costs incl. shipping? By the way, just want to let you know that I told my boyfriend about the private dining thing and he is interested so I think we're going to try it out soon! Thanks for the referral! :)

Have a great weekend!

Thanks for sharing this recipe...it's like my fave comfort food scrambled egg w/ tomatoes over rice.

Btw H&M had a lace moto jacket like that! When I first saw your post I thought it was the same one. The one at H&M was about $40 USD.
